There are several problems that may
arise from living in small spaces. Some of these are direct problems, while
others are caused indirectly. The people who are most negatively affected by
small living space are the residents.
Convenience:
It is inconvenient to live in small spaces as there is not enough room for activities or to store things. People easily bump onto other people and there is a lack of privacy.
Safety:
Exit routes in case of emergency may be blocked. This is a serious issue as people may not be able to escape the building during accidents or disasters. There is also an increased risk of fire as electrical devices may be placed very close to each other. Having many things and furniture stacked up can be dangerous when they fall down and hit someone. The lack of space between furniture makes it easy for people to bump onto them. Trailing cables are also common and may cause electrocution.
Health:
Cramped houses have spots which are difficult to clean. They are usually damp, messy or dirty, giving rose to various health problems, more commonly respiratory or skin irritations. Small apartments are also usually dark and dim, causing eye problems. Health can also be affected by the lack
of windows, as what often happens when buildings are too close to each other or
are too small to have enough windows. Windows serve in air regulation and to
let sunlight in. Without windows, there is poor ventilation and the air is
damp. Research has also shown that sunlight depravity causes mental and physical
problems, mainly increased risk of depression, heart attack, cancer, and
diabetes.
Loss of aesthetic beauty:
There is no space to display artworks
like painting or fancy furniture. The absence of windows and gardens worsen this case, as there is a loss of scenery. This causes the numbing of
creativity. Presence of artworks engages and nurtures the creative mind and at
the same time, making the room looks livelier. Aesthetic beauty can give
inspiration and provide calming or relaxing feelings.
