What Makes a House Look Small

Often, the size of living space is not actually decreasing, but the interior looks small due to bad design and/or poor housekeeping. For example, a messy room with objects cluttered around causes it to appear cramped.

Common mistakes:
  • Dark wall paint: Absorbs light and gives the illusion of a smaller room.
  • Lack of natural lighting (windows).
  • Too many furniture.
  • Furniture of different/mismatched colors.
  • Furniture of different color with the wall: Do not blend in.
  • Large furniture: Breaks the open space within a room.
  • Tall furniture: Makes ceiling looks lower.
  • Furniture blocks walking pathways: Reduces open space, dangerous and inconvenient.
  • Absence of storage space: Cluttered and messy house.
Suggestions:
  • Light and bright colors for walls.
  • More/larger windows.
  • Reduce unnecessary furniture.
  • Transparent furniture/same color shade with walls.
  • Smaller/shorter furniture.
  • Put furniture near the walls.
  • Use creative/built-in storage.
  • Maintain regular/proper housekeeping.
